Basic health information for travelers to Liechtenstein

• Cases of tick borne encephalitis have been reported throughout the more wooded and isolated regions of the country. All travellers staying in the country during the spring or summer months are advised to regularly check their skin for signs of infection and to buy appropriate levels of insect repellent for defence.

• Visitors to the region are urged to follow all standard procedures to avoid any chance of infection from contaminated needles or from sexual intercourse.

• Travellers to the nearby alpine regions should be wary of avalanches and other mountain based dangers that could cause pose a danger.

• The overall standard of healthcare is considered to be of a very good standard but somewhat limited in size. UK travellers should obtain a European Health Insurance Card prior to arriving inside the country. This card will assist in paying for any urgently required assistance that might be needed although health and travel insurance are also advised. An emergency evacuation to a nearby country might be required in the event of a serious accident or injury.

• Although relatively safe, instances of petty crime such as pick pocketing have been reported and all travellers to the country are advised to keep their passport and other valuables in a safe and secure location for the duration of their visit.

• Whilst inside the country, all travellers are urged to avoid any large demonstrations or protests which could quickly turn violent and should check the countries current social and political situation prior to entry.

• Although in quite good condition, local roads can become potentially hazardous during the winter periods. All foreign drivers are strongly advised to check that their intended route is still passable before beginning any long journeys which could be affected by sudden changes in weather. Many of the roads are mountainous and travellers should avoid driving at a fast rate of speed in these areas.

• All visitors to the country are urged to respect all local customs where possible and should avoid any behaviour or actions which could attract attention or bring them to the attention of the security services.

• Homosexuality is not currently illegal in this country but drug related crimes can still result in serious punishments and possible jail sentences.
